The Best Sod You Can Buy

Raft River Sod produces the best Turf grass in the business, because we focus on the most important areas of the grass production; grass varieties, grass maturity, drought tolerance, soil fertility, growing conditions and service

Grass Varieties

We choose our seed from the latest, strongest genetic varieties available. We mix at least five or six certified varieties of Kentucky Blue Grass and a small percentage of Perennial Rye. The criteria we use to determine which varieties we plant are; Dark Green Color, Root Strength, Disease and Insect Resistance, Longevity, Sun Tolerance, Shade, Tolerance, Drought Resistance, and Grass Durability. We use University Means Tests which compare varieties and these characteristics.

Grass Maturity

We allow our grass to mature in our fields for at least 18 months. When you receive your sod with this maturity, the more healthy and trouble-free your lawn will be.

Drought Tolerant

We plant Blue Grass Sod varieties, because they have had the ability to resist overall, the negative effects of drought, sports, high traffic and poor management more than any other type of grass, in this climate. Some types of grass need a little less water to maintain. However, these varieties do not resist wear, disease, or drought as well as Blue Grass. They die easily and usually need to be replaced often. They may not withstand the riggers of normal use, either in a residential or commercial application. When drought problems become sever enough, or the water is shut off during extremely hot temperatures, most other varieties will die. But, Blue Grass however, not only resists wear and continual use, it will green up as soon as water is reapplied.

Growing Conditions

Raft River Sod is located in the beautiful Raft River Valley, at the confluence of the Raft River and the Snake Rivers. Our little mountain valley received hundreds of feet of topsoil, deposited from the historic flooding by the Snake River, before it was dammed. Our Grass is grown on this clean, rock free, sandy, silt soil.

Our water is pumped from deep wells, drawing water from the clean, fresh aquifer. There are no weed seeds spread in our fields by water, as is usually the case with canal or river water. Finally, our sod has earth worms. A universal sign of soil health and fertility is earthworms, providing “natural aeration”

Re-Growth Sod

After the 1st Harvest of a new field, the field is cleaned, leveled and over seeded with the same seed mix used to establish the field. This process creates the best of all worlds for the following harvest. The roots are stronger and more matured, while we maintain the original genetic profile of the sod.
